Welcome to our website for "Pampa's Tribute to Woody Guthrie." We are a 501.c.3 arts organization which
is working to tell the story of Woody Guthrie, the musician-artist-writer-protester of the 20th century, who was
born in Okemah Oklahoma, but began his musical journey in Pampa Texas during the 1930s era of the Dust Bowl,
Prohibition, and the Depression.
Our base is the Harris Drug Store at 320 South Cuyler Street in downtown Pampa. New in the early 1930s,
it now is 70+ years old. While never a fancy building-and never in a fancy part of town-it now has a historic authenticity
no one would have imagined during the time Shorty Harris sold his Jamaican ginger ("jake") along with other
questionable medications. Woody worked for Shorty off and on for several years, and even painted the sign above
the store, which read: HARRIS DRUGS, and signed his name. Someone about 20 years ago sandblasted off the original sign.
In 2003 that we had it "duplicated" to look much as it did in Woody's time.
The old HARRIS DRUGS is now the official "Woody Guthrie Folk Music Center of Pampa Texas," under a license
agreement with the Woody Guthrie Archives and Foundation in New York City (www.woodyguthrie.org), which Nora Guthrie,
Woody's only surviving daughter, administers.
Please browse through our various topics, and click on the links which will take you to connected websites.
And if you care to make a tax-deductible contribution to the development of the old Harris Drug Store,
there's a way to do that as well.
You're also invited to contact us about souvenirs and memorabilia we have available for sale. Items include T-shirts
and tote bags with an imprint of Woody's signature and the final phrase of "This Land Is Your Land," Woody's most well-known song
(reprinted by permission of the Woody Guthrie Foundation). And there are custom-designed craft items by artisan-inmates at the
Jordan-Baten Prison Unit a few miles east of Pampa. Also, Thelma Bray's "Reflections - The Life and Times of Woody Guthrie,
Books 1 & 2" (with assistance by Pete Seeger), and other publications and C.Ds.
